Founded in 1988, the University of Florida Health Science Center Jacksonville campus is home to more than 1,500 UF faculty, residents, fellows, staff and administrators. The center is co-located with UF Health Jacksonville on a campus that encompasses more than 10 city blocks. The colleges of Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy all have a major presence on the Jacksonville campus.
The UF College of Medicine – Jacksonville offers more than 48 accredited residency and fellowship programs. Between 50 and 70 percent of the trainees remain in Florida post-graduation. Overall, UF graduation medication education (GME) programs support 430 medical residents and fellows at UF Health Jacksonville.
As such, the size and scope of GME on the Jacksonville campus ranks third in Florida, behind only UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville and University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. Additionally, third- and fourth-year UF medical students complete rotations in Jacksonville, staying for two weeks to two months at a time during the academic year.
Also, there are more than 180 UF College of Pharmacy students on campus and nearly 60 UF College of Nursing students, with that number to reach 80 in 2024. These colleges provide a ready pool of health professionals for the region. Aside from the UF Health campus in Gainesville, there is no other organization in the state that provides this level of health professional education in terms of size and scope.
The campus is home to the UF Center for Simulation Education and Safety Research, a state-of-the-art training center spread over two floors of the UF Health Jacksonville Pavilion and one of the largest simulation centers in the nation. It also houses Borland Library, one of the three University of Florida health science center libraries.
The Health Science Center includes a 16,000-square-foot research laboratory building, with space dedicated to translational research, which is focused on bringing discoveries to patients as rapidly as possible. The Jacksonville campus also houses a clinical research unit to perform specialized inpatient studies and has designated resources for extensive outpatient studies.
