Digital Pathology Use in Labs Growing, But Barriers to Adoption Remain

Digital pathology has accelerated greatly since the first approval of a digital slide scanner in 2017, especially throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and as pressures from a dwindling pathology workforce have continued to rise. However, there are still some barriers to adoption that have prevented labs from tapping into the many benefits of digital pathology. Paige CEO, Andy Moye, spoke to 360Dx to share how the benefits of such technology, including that it enables the use of pathology AI, vastly outweigh the challenges. “The artificial intelligence-based models being developed for diagnostic use can ‘help democratize knowledge’ and give pathologists more confidence in their diagnoses, perhaps without the need for a consult,” he said.
